We are a branch of Engineers Without Borders at the University of Washington striving to create a more accessible campus and bring awareness to these problems.
This team is developing an interactive map that displays accessible routes to better help UW students with disabilities navigate campus. Through exploring campus, creating routes, and compiling data in a cohesive way, the UW Map team is working towards making campus navigation easier for the disabled community of the University of Washington.
D.A.T.A., or Design Accessibility Towards All, is collecting qualitative information from students, staff and community members about campus accessibility. The information will be utilized to determine what future projects EWB Accessibility should focus on, as well as help other branches of the team (and possibly the university) work towards their goals.
Currently, there is only one usable device on campus to charge electric wheelchairs, located in the Hans Rosling Center for Population Health. On top of that, the only wheelchair charging boxes made for public use cost way more than they should. Personal wheelchair charging devices cost anywhere between $20-$100, whereas the public-use chargers cost $750. Because of this high price and lack of chargers on campus, UW has contacted EWB Accessibility about creating and installing more charging stations at a lower cost.
Our group’s tasks include creating an original design for a wheelchair charger and storage box, surveying students and faculty to choose the best locations for installation, and collaborating with UW administration.
